Ynez Johnston (California, b. 1920-2019) large watercolor and ink on paper titled “Beyond the Gobi”. Mounted on a white mat with beige linen mat under glass in a silver metal frame. Sheet: 27 1/2 in H x 39 in. W. Frame: 39 in. H x 50 in. W. Biography: Ynez Johnston attended the University of California, Berkeley where she studied drafting, painting and printmaking with Worth Ryder, Erle Loran and Margaret Peterson. Johnston’s unique style blended modernism and ancient art forms inspired by her travels to Italy, Mexico, India and Nepal. In 1951, a selection of her paintings and etchings were featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Subsequently, she received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, first place in watercolor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1952, and Fresno Art Museum’s Distinguished Artist Award in 1992. Her work is in the collections of several prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Source: artist’s website).
CONDITION: 1/4 in edge tear to paper, near signature. The work has slipped in the frame, causing creasing along the bottom edge. Frame with scattered small dents and abrasions.
