Sam Gilliam (American, b. 1933) monotype on handmade paper titled "Cape". Float mounted on white paper. Pencil signed and dated '74 lower right and numbered #14/16. Sheet – 22 3/4" H x 28" W. Framed – 28 3/4" H x 33 3/4" W. Biography: Sam Gilliam is an African American painter often associated with the Washington Color School and is considered a Color field painter. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi the seventh of eight children, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky with his family shortly after his birth. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degree of Fine Arts at the University of Louisville. In 1955, Gilliam had his first solo exhibition at the University of Louisville. Condition: Overall very good condition.
