Martin Chirino (Spanish, 1925-2019), gilt-chromed iron abstract sculpture, 1970. Square hollow forms curve and intersect in an organic style. 16 in. W x 7 in H x 5 1/2 in. D. (40 cm x 18 cm x 13 cm). Not signed. Accompanied by a circular wooden turntable base, 1 3/4 in. H x 9 1/2 in. diameter. Note: this lot includes the 1970 purchase receipt from the Galeria Juana Mordo, Madrid, with signed certification that it is an original bronze sculpture by Martin Chirino titled “Raiz” (“Root”), along with a 1990 letter from the same gallery appraising it at $27,000. We wish to thank the Fundation de Art y Pensamiento Martin Chirino for confirming this sculpture is listed as ref. no. 149 in the Catalog Razonado Vol. 1, where it is titled “Lady” with the material listed as “chromed iron, golden.”
PROVENANCE: The estate of Eleanor H. Baer, Memphis, Tennessee (The Eleanor H. Baer Irrevocable Trust), acquired from the Galeria Juana Mordo, Madrid, 1970.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with scattered oxidation and surface irregularities, as made.
