Erling Meinert Heerwagen (Denmark/Germany, 20th century) oil on canvas post-impressionist painting, titled "Aften (Evening)", depicting two pairs of red and black dress shoes, a round container with a green lid, and a light blue box with fabric in an interior setting. Signed lower left "Meinert Heerwagen" and dated lower right "1944". Handwritten inscription with title, artist name, and incorrect date "'Aften (Evening)' (illegible) Meinert Heerwagen 1942", en verso. Housed in a molded silvered wood frame with foliate and shell designs and gilt inner molding. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 16 3/4" W. Framed: 25" H x 27 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Minor scattered abrasion to paint layer. Canvas is loose in the frame. Frame with losses to gilt, largest measuring 2 1/2" H x 1 1/8" W.
