Eszter Mattioni (Hungary 1902-1993) oil on board surrealist painting depicting a female bust with flowering plant and bird in case to her right, buildings visible through a window in the background. Signed lower left. Wide molded giltwood frame. Sight: 23" H x 19" W. Framed: 30" H. x 26" W. Painting is similar to one published in the book titled MATTIONI by Dr. Kiss Akos, with forward by Dr. Pogany O. Gabor, published 1972, page 75. A copy of the book accompanies this lot. Biography: Eszter Mattioni studied at the Applied Arts Vocational School, then continued her studies at the High School of Fine Arts under professor Gyula Rudnay. Between 1931 and 1942 she worked with the Szolnok group of artists and made study trips to Italy in 1935 and Scandinavia. Her painting titled PEASANT BRIDE was acquired by the Louvre and exhibited at the Museum du Luxembourg as early as 1937. In 1946 she became Member of the Pal Szinyei Merse Society of Hungarian painters. Provenance: private Tennessee collection, acquired in Europe. Condition: Couple of scattered, minute flakes and 1 possible tiny scratch (1/2" L) to left of subject's neck, overall very good condition. Book cover edges ripped and torn. Scuff marks on back cover.
