Julius Wasserstein (Rhode Island/California, 1924-1985) oil on found panel Abstract Expressionist painting, “Homeostasis,” 1957. Gestural, predominantly blue and black brushwork fills the upper two-thirds of the composition while brown hues, along with shades of white and black, dominate the lower third. With passages of impasto throughout plus pink and yellow highlights. With Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery and 1961 and 1963 Staempfli Gallery, New York, tags affixed to backing. Housed in a thin, ebonized wood frame. Panel: 93 in. H x 48 in. W. Framed: 94 in. H x 49 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned by the Vanderbilt University Museum of Art to benefit the acquisitions fund. Ex-Staempfli Gallery, New York.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Minor losses to panel and nails/nail holes, especially to edges of board, are inherent.
