Fifty-three (53) pieces Danish Anton Michelsen "Jul/Julen" or Christmas gilt sterling silver flatware. Includes twenty-one (21) spoon and fork pairs, three (3) spoon pairs with matching designs from their year of production, and five (5) single spoons. Designs vary; many including enamel and figural decoration, all thematic to the Christmas season. Majority of sets are marked "Jul" or "Julen" with their year of production. All marked "A. Michelsen. Copenhagen" and "Sterling. Denmark." followed by a trademark symbol. Some with assorted hallmarks. Thirty-eight (38) pieces maintain original plastic packaging, eight (8) pieces are still sealed. All range in size from 6" L to 6 1/2" L. 77.450 total troy ounces. Circa 1940-1973. Provenance: The collection of Gary Glesser of Loudon, Tennessee, by descent from his grandparents, Captain Hoyt and Rachel Holton of Toledo, Ohio. Hoyt Holton became, at age 17, the youngest captain of a Great Lakes Freighter. In the 1960s, Captain Holton participated in a 26-day Admiral Byrd Society trip replicating the explorer's famous transpolar expedition, during which he met the Pope and Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev. Many items in the collection were brought back as souvenirs from that journey and other frequent voyages.
