Large oil on canvas painting depicting a battle in the Roman Colosseum between gladiators, attendants, and animals, with crowds of visitors in ancient attire watching from above. Illegibly signed with possible date in red "…uil..M..gal '76" Housed in an ornate period late 19th-century giltwood fame with acanthus corners. Sight: 25 1/8" H x 37 1/4' W. Framed: 35 1/2" H x 47 1/2" W. European, late 19th century.
PROVENANCE: A Middle Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: Painting with light grime and overall craquelure. Frame with areas of gilt loss, largest area approximately 3", and some restoration.
