Sterling silver horse racing trophy by Woodside Sterling Co. Figural horse head handles, each with wreath terminus, flank a bulbous body having raised scrolling foliate decoration to rim and pedestal foot. Engraved scroll cartouches to each side, one inscribed PRESIDENT'S CUP / PRESENTED BY / ADAM H GROEL / TO THE ROAD HORSE ASSOCIATION / OF NEW JERSEY / 1908 and the other inscribed 2:28 TROT: OCT 24TH / WON BY BERT BRENTFORD / OWNER JOHN H. CUTHELL / TIME 2:29 to other side. Maker's mark and Sterling stamped to underside. 11 1/4" H x 14 1/2" W (incl. handles) 11 1/2" dia. Early 20th century. 58.75 troy ounces. Note: The Road Horse Association of New Jersey, also known as the Gentleman's Driving Club, was established circa 1900, and by 1942, was described in Harness Horse Magazine as "the oldest active, continuous Matinee Association in the United States." Their weekly harness racing "matinees" were held at Waverly Park, which later became known as Weequahic Park.
