Two early Middle Tennessee / Gen. James Winchester related documents. 1st item: Clipped signature of James Winchester, "Dear General /Your obedient servant, J. Winchester", 2-1/2" x 4". 2nd item: Partially printed legal document authorizing depositions in a "certain matter of controversy" between James Winchester, complianant, and Isaac Bledsoe & Others, Defendant, signed by witness Randal McGavock and dated April 11th, 1823. En verso are the names James Winchester, John Overton Esq., Thomas Wharton, Thomas Williams and others. The document likely concerns a property dispute between Winchester and the son or nephew of Sumner County pioneer Isaac Bledsoe who established Bledsoe's Fort and was killed in an Indian attack in 1793. Randal McGavock (1766-1843) was mayor of Nashville from 1824-1825 and established Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Condition: 1st item: light discoloration, particularly to upper edge, crease across signature. 2nd item: Overall toning (darker at center section exterior) and a couple of small stains, some minor chipping at fold edges and corners, crease across signature, both in overall good condition.
