Grouping of six (6) 20th century collectibles. 1st item: J. R. Williams (American, 1888 -1957) pen and ink on paperboard, "The Dignity of Age," single-panel comic cell depicting two men discussing the unearthing of an ancient bowl with horses and a sloping hill in the background; from the publication, "Out Our Way," originally published October 9, 1946. Printed label, lower right, CORP. 1946 BY NEA SERVICE, INC. T. N. REG. U. S. PAT. OFF. Labeled in blue ink and pencil, RELEASE Wed Oct 9 PRINT Mon Sept 16 MAIL Sept 20, SEPT 6 RECâD vertically, and museum accession number en verso. 12 1/4" H x 13 1/4" W. 2nd item: Brunton pocket transit compass made for surveying on the surface or underground. Hinged, mirrored lid with sight line and glass viewing window on an aluminum octagonal body containing folding sight at North; compass needle; needle ring in graduated degrees; and face containing star at N; letters E, W, and S; graduated degrees in Western half and a clinometer with leveling bubbles and vernier that reads to 5 minutes. Inscribed with manufacturer and patent information with museum accession number written, en verso. 1 1/8" H x 3 1/8" W x 2 7/8" D. Colorado, early 20th century. 3rd item: Brunton pocket transit compass brown leather case with tooled beaded motif, strap loop, and leather button to secure flat top. Museum accession number inside lid. 1 1/2" H x 3 3/8" W x 3 1/4" D. Early 20th century. 4th item: Brass Louisville & Nashville Railroad switch signal padlock with a band and circle L & N design on the barrel and inscribed SIGNAL L on the front and YALE on the back. Serial number inscribed on bottom; museum accession number on base. 3 5/8" H x 2" W x 7/8" D. 20th century. 5th item: Louisville & Nashville Railroad doorknob with L & N logo inscribed onto the knob with latch shaft. Museum accession number on shaft. 2 1/4" H x 5 1/4" W x 2 1/4" D. 20th century. 6th item: Louisville & Nashville bronze colored metal plaque which reads, ERECTED BY L. & N. R.R. Co., with small nail holes in each corner. Museum accession number en verso. 1 3/8" H x 4" W. 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall very good condition with slight surface grime and some transfer discoloration en verso. 2nd item: Overall good condition with all working parts and hinges. Use wear to the body with some oxidation spots and slight desilvering of the mirror at the sight line. 3rd item: Use and age wear with thinning of leather on the flap and partial detachment of the strap loop. 4th item: Overall good condition with some denting to shackle and scratching to body and keyhole. 5th item: Overall very good condition with minor use wear to the latch shaft. 6th item: Overall good condition with small tear in brass by the bottom left nail hole.
