1st item: Clipped signature of John Sevier (1745-1815; first Governor of Tennessee), as Governor, also signed by R. Houston, secretary. 3" x 9-5/8". 2nd document: March 9, 1789 edition of the Connecticut Courant Newspaper with account on page 2 from "a gentleman in Fayetteville, North Carolina" regarding "The State of Franklin" (land which would later become Tennessee). "Typton with his party, in the absence of Governor Sevier, surprised the metropolis and carried of (sic) all the public offices records &c… Sevier with a corps of 500 rifle men, has taken up his winter quarters in the heart of the Cherokee nation after burning killing and destroying all that came in his way…" It goes on to recount an "economical law of the new state of Franklin, found amongst the public papers" which lays out proposed salaries of the civil officers of the commonwealth in raccoon, beaver, muskrat and mink. 13-7/8" x 9-1/2" Condition: 1st item: General toning, fold lines, tape and edge chipping at left edge, fold line with 1/16" loss across Sevier's signature. 2nd item: Partial tears at central fold line, top and bottom, 1/2'" tear to fold line on right edge (both pages) light scattered stains and discoloration.
