Henry S. Cottrell (United Kingdom, fl. 1840-1860) oil on cardstock (laid on canvas) titled "Taking a Gate" depicting an English hunting scene of an equestrian rider in a red jacket on a brown horse in the act of leaping over a fence, with two dogs in a landscape setting at right and a second rider visible in the left background. Signed "H.S. Cottrell" lower left. Clipping from a copy of "Country Life" magazine advertising the sale of this painting and another Cottrell painting titled "Entering Covert" at the Richard Green (Fine Paintings), Ltd. art gallery in London, affixed en verso. Gilt metal placard with artist's name and dates, affixed lower center of frame. Housed in a wooden frame with gilt trim. Sight: 10" H x 12" W. Framed: 14" H x 16" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Light craquelure, minute area of paint loss, top right edge of canvas. Examination under UV light reveals areas of accretions to horse and rider and areas of sky.
