Mary Ellen Hornsby Garret (American/Tennessee, 1869-1962) oil on canvas landscape painting depicting a farmer working in a field in the foreground and a large tree with dark foliage in the background, all under a cloudy blue sky, rendered with a textured impasto technique. Signed faintly lower right. Inscribed "Painted by Mary Ellen Hornsby Garret 'Mama Garrett' student of Lloyd Branson." Housed in a giltwood frame with blue frieze and a linen mat. Sight: 9" H x 9 1/2" W. Framed: 12 1/4" H x 12 3/4" W. Biography: Mary Ellen Hornsby was born in Kingston, TN in 1869 and died in Knoxville in 1962. Her parents were Angelina Matilda Wiley Hornsby and William Jackson Hornsby. Note: Included with this item is a scanned copy of a photograph of Mary (pictured upper left) with her fellow classmates around their teacher, Lloyd Branson (American/Tennessee, 1861-1925) which is featured in AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EAST TENNESSEE, published by the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, 1981.
