Two (2) oil on canvas nautical marine landscapes both signed, one by W. Barre. 1st item: English school, 19th century, oil on canvas painting depicting sailboats and figures along a rocky shoreline, with steep grassy cliffs in the background, under a cloudy sky. Illegibly signed (possibly "Nub…") lower left. Label for an English and Scottish export company affixed en verso of frame. Housed in a Rococo-style giltwood frame. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 23" W. Framed: 17 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. 19th century. 2nd item: Dutch school, 19th century, oil on canvas painting depicting boats floating along a shoreline near a small village, with figures and architecture including a small church and windmill in the background, under a cloudy blue sky. Signed faintly "W. Barre" and dated "1861" lower right. Housed in a giltwood frame with s-scroll and carved corner decoration. With partial sticker reading "[Ba]rre (W.) / Coast Scene/ [P]aris" affixed to back of frame. Sight: 11" H x 14" W. Framed: 17" H x 19 " W.
PROVENANCE: The Tina McWhorter Trust; from the collection of John and Tina McWhorter, Memphis, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Painting in overall good condition with some retouching to lower edge. Frame with gilt paint restoration. 2nd item: Painting has been lined. Loss and tear to upper right corner of work. Repaired hole to center with associated overpainting. Small scratch to upper right corner measuring 1" L. Minute loss to lower right corner measuring 1/8" dia. Frame with scattered loss to carved decoration and some areas of gilt restoration.
