Continental School, pair of two (2) pastel pendant portraits depicting a man and a woman, each seated and wearing fashionable 19th-century clothing. 1st item: A depiction of a woman dressed in a white and yellow gown and ornate feathered hat, who holds an open book and faces the viewer. Set against a grey background. Sight: 9" H x 8" W. Framed: 14" H x 13" W. 2nd item: A depiction of a seated man wearing a blue tail coat and white pants who holds a newspaper and faces the viewer. A vibrant red highlight appears on the seat of his chair. Set against a grey background. Both housed in original, antique gilt frames. Sight: 9 1/2" H x 8 1/2" W. Framed: 14 5/16" H x 13 1/4" W. Both circa 1800.
PROVENANCE: Private Illinois Collection.
CONDITION: Both in good condition. Man's portrait has an area of dampstaining to the upper left edge that does not interfere significantly with the image. Both frames have scratches and abrasions commensurate with age. Not examined outside of frame.
