English school, 18th century oil on canvas three-fourths length portrait of a gentleman, Mr. James Abraham Bodel (1737-1795) attired in a black coat with a white lace cravat and lace sleeves and a jeweled ring, seated at a table adorned in a green tablecloth cloth with paisley decoration, his arm resting on the table with his hand on a book, against a neutral background. Old label with sitter name en verso of stretcher. Unsigned, Housed in a giltwood frame with foliate decoration. Sight: 22 1/2" H x 16 1/2" W. Framed: 27 1/2" H x 21 3/4" W. Note: Ancestry.com records a James Bodel born c. 1736/37 in Staffordshire, England.
PROVENANCE: The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Painting with light craquelure, has been wax lined. Frame with significant wear and loss to gilt decoration throughout.
