Continental school, 18th century oil on canvas portrait of a woman attired in a blue dress with lace collar and sleeves, a double-stranded pearl necklace, and drop pearl earrings, against a plain background. Unsigned. Housed in a carved gilt and gesso frame with foliate leaf decoration. Sight: 31 1/2" H x 25 " W. Framed: 39 1/2" H x 33 " W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Painting has been lined, the lining coated in early 20th-century newspaper clippings. Old restoration with retouching to the edges, background, and face. Some areas have been over-cleaned. Craquelure throughout. Frame with small area of loss in upper center.
