A hand-painted Russian icon in tempera on wood panel with kovcheg depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ Child seated in a fountain as the "The Life Giving Source" (alternatively Fountain or Spring) before a gold field. They are flanked by angels and below a crowd of worshippers has gathered before a rocky landscape. With a silvered brass basma with foliate ornamentation, the right side of which has been replaced with a more intricately patterned segment. Sticker label, en verso. 10 3/8" H x 9 1/16" W. Likely late 19th/early 20th century.
CONDITION: Painting has a 1/4" dent in a figure's right arm, lower left, and minute scattered gilt loss, primarily in upper register. Basma is missing nails and some cracking is visible on the sides. Lower right corner of basma is partially detached. Right side of basma has been replaced.
