French porcelain potpourri jar and cover, attributed to Jacob Petit, square form with pierced gilded relief frieze, the sides with vignettes of young lovers to one side and portrait of female titled "Mlle de Fontanges" to the other side, canted corners, on lion mask and paw feet. Pierced cover with gilt foliate scroll decoration and relief molded and pierced freize. Blue "JP" underglaze mark to the base. 9" H. Note: Mlle. de Fontanges was the young mistress of Louis XIV from 1678 until her death from complications from miscarriages at 19 years of age in 1681. 9" H. 19th century. CONDITION: Old repair to clean break at top corner of urn. Overall general wear to decoration and gilt.
