Two (2) Mexican folk art retablo paintings on tin. 1st item: A painting of the Holy Trinity of Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit accompanied by their iconographic identifiers and seated in majesty in heaven. Their feet are atop four angelic heads who peek out through the clouds in the lower register. In a wooden frame with no backing. Sight: 14" H x 10" W. Framed: 17" H x 13" W. 2nd item: A painting of the Christ Child as the Holy Child of Atocha, seated and flanked by drapery and vases with flowers. He is accompanied by iconographic identifiers including the wide-brimmed hat with plumes, brown cloak with white lace collar, basket containing bread, and a pilgrim's staff with attached water gourd. Unframed. 14" H x 10" W. Both items late 19th to early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Lewis, Carthage, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: some minor scratches to paint and approximately 1 1/2" scratches on the face of God and the body of the Holy Spirit. Frame is worn and glass is loose. 2nd item: minor loss to paint throughout and some oxidation. Tin is creased slightly in the lower left corner.
