Four (4) Mexican folk art retablos painted on tin depicting saints. 1st item: Painting depicting a winged St. Vincent Ferrer holding the bible open to Revelations while allusions to the last judgment play out in the background. 9" H x 6 1/2" W. Early- mid 19th century. 2nd item: Painting depicting Archangel Raphael holding a staff in one hand and a dish in the other, with a forest landscape in the background. 9 1/4" H x 6 1/4" W. Late 19th century. 3rd item: Painting depicting the Penitence of Saint Jerome including the emaciated saint holding a crucifix and beating his breast with a book, quill, and skull to his side, a lion at his feet, and an angel playing a trumpet in the sky, upper right. He sits in a desert landscape on the base of a portico. 9 3/4' H x 7" W. Late 19th/early 20th century. 4th item: Painting depicting Saint Hedwig, attired in a crown and regal garments, giving alms to an imprisoned man, while her attendant carries an abbess' staff. 10" H x 7" W. Early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Lewis, Carthage, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Rust oxidation throughout commensurate with age. 2nd item: Light oxidation to edges, scattered losses, and surface scratching. 3rd item: Rust oxidation on right edge and scattered throughout. Some losses near nail hole, upper center. 4th item: Light surface wear and oxidation commensurate with age.
