George Herbert McCord (New York/New Jersey, 1848-1909) oil on canvas maritime painting depicting numerous sailboats upon calm water reflecting the colorful twilight sky, including one carrying figures who converse with others on a rowboat. Signed "G.H. McCord" lower left. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate molding throughout and egg-and-dart top edge. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 29 1/2" H x 33 3/4" W.
CONDITION: Surface grime and yellowing to varnish throughout. Puncture to canvas above signature measuring approximately 3/8" dia, plus some surrounding paint loss. 5/8" tear to center right of canvas, in sky. Two minor abrasions to paint layer lower left. Minor scattered deterioration of varnish layer throughout and scattered errant white marks to right half. Old tape repair, partially detached, en verso beneath lower stretcher.
