DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA, Vol. I-IV, translated from the original Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra by Charles Jarvas / Jarvis, Esq., by printed by J. Brettell for T. McClean, London, 1819. Hardcover octavos, 1,589 total marble-edged pages including 24 engraved plates with hand-coloring, hardbound in brown leather with blind stamped covers, gilt lettering and blind stamping to spines, four raised hubs, three with green grosgrain ribbon bookmarks, marbled end papers. Ex Libris plates to interior of front covers. Approximately 8 7/8" H x 5 5/8" W x 1 1/4" D. Note: this is a rare 19th-century line-for-line re-issue of Charles Jervas's 1801 translation. Due to a printer's error, Jervasâ name was changed to Jarvis, and it has since become known as the Jarvis translation.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Edith (Edie) M. Bass, Nashville, Tennessee, by descent from her parents, Walter Paul McBride and Claire Childs of Lake Forest, Illinois.
CONDITION: Covers in overall good condition with wear, scuffs, cracking to leather, corners bumped. Pages in overall good, legible condition with toning, foxing spots. Illustrations are collated.
