Italian School, possibly Siena, oil or tempera and gesso on panel religious painting, possibly the center of a church altarpiece, depicting the Madonna with Christ Child on her lap. Mary is attired in blue robes and seated on a red and gold cloth covering; both she and the child are crowned with incised halos. The panel is additionally tooled with circles and darts, and framed with a narrow molding around the upper surface of the panel. Overall: 17" H x 9" W. 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Craquelure throughout, UV light reveals scattered overpainting to Christ's cheek and possible overpainting to red cloth; other possible areas of overpainting and re-varnishing; tiny flake to Mary's cheek, a couple of small flakes/losses to red cloth.
