Russian religious icon, tempera on wood panel, depicting Jesus Christ's crucifixion on the cross at Golgatha (Place of the Skull); His mother the Virgin Mary and disciple St. John at His sides and a skull at his feet. Probably circa 1900 in the manner of the 14th century Novgorod School (for a similar example, see the circa 1360 Novgorod Crucifixion Icon in the collection of the Musee du Louvre, Paris). 13-1/2" x 11-1/2". Provenance: the estate of Helen B. Patterson, Gallatin, Tennessee. Condition: Crack/separation running length of icon. Missing frame; some possible inpainting.
