Framed Aubusson Louis XVI wool tapestry, the central cartouche depicting an ape or monkey with two goats, likely a scene from The Fables de Fontaine, "The Animals' Parliament with Ape J. Presiding," after a cartoon by Jean Baptiste Huet (French, 1745-1811). The animal scene is surrounded by floral garlands on an ivory ground. Mounted in a gilt wood moulded frame with Mayorcas, Ltd. label. Sight: 25 1/4" H x 54" W. Framed: 29 3/8" H x 57 7/8" W. French, late 18th or early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Kentucky estate, ex-Mayorcas Ltd., England and Bergdorf Goodman, New York. Partial 1968 invoice from Bergdorff Goodman with object description (lacking price) is available to the winning bidder.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with even fading throughout. Some areas of reweaving, mainly around edges.
