Eimerich Rein (Norway/Rhode Island, 1827-1900), “Moonlight on the Lake,” oil on canvas landscape painting depicting moonlight, filtered by clouds and shimmering on the surface of a lake, partially visible through a clearing in the midst of darkened trees. Signed lower right. Artist name and title to applied plaque lower center of frame. The wide giltwood frame with impressed, speckled texture and applied foliate border appears original. Sight: 20 in. H x 31 1/2 in. W. Frame: 27 3/4 in. H x 39 1/4 in. W. Note: Norweigan born artist Eimerich Rein was a founding member of the Providence, Rhode Island Art Club, along with fellow artists Edward Mitchell Bannister and Sydney Burleigh. According to the club’s archives, the first formal meeting to organize the group took place in Rein’s studio on North Main Street.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Lyman O. “Buzz” Heidtke, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Craquelure and grime throughout. Scattered areas of pinpoint size exfoliation, most concentrated in the lower right corner. Frame with wear and losses to edges and beaded molding up to 2 1/2 in.
