19th century German oval oil on canvas portrait painting depicting a young male composer or musician attired in a black dress coat with bright red lapel and cuffs and seated at a piano composing music. Initialed mid right margin "J.E." above the numbers "860". Additional paper label en verso with illegible German script and dated Feb. 25, 1825. Housed in a carved gilt wood frame with floral embellishments and a green velvet liner. Sight – 17 3/8" H x 13" W. Framed – 25" H x 20 3/4" W. Provenance: The collection of internationally known ragtime pianist and historian Johnny Maddox, Gallatin, TN. CONDITION: Overall light craquelure, some discoloration to velvet, a couple of pinprick losses lower mid margin.
