Two framed charcoal or chalk pendant portraits on paper laid to linen and depicting a well-dressed man and woman, likely a couple. Possibly members of the McBee family of McMinn County per oral history. Unsigned. Attributed to Edmund/Edward Hacker (McMinn County, fl. 1850). Housed under glass in gilt and wood frames. Sight: 22" H x 17 1/2" W. Frame: 34" H x 29" W. Note: Two related charcoal portraits offered in this auction likely depict the sons of this couple, see lot 353. Note: For related works by Hacker, see "Portraits" in Namuni Hale Young, Art & Furniture of East Tennessee (East Tennessee Historical Society, 1997), figs. 43-48; these six portraits dated 1851 portray residents of McMinn County and are executed in pen and ink accompanied with either chalk, as in the present examples, or watercolor.
CONDITION: Superficial grime throughout plus soiling to areas under frame. Some losses to edges, under frame.
