Robert Crannell Minor (American, 1839-1904), “Catskill Landscape,” oil on canvas landscape painting. Light breaks through a clearing in a grove of trees, creating patches of light and shadow and giving the viewer a glimpse of the distant horizon. Signed “Minor” lower right and titled on label en verso. Inscribed “Van der Meer” verso of frame. Intricately carved frame with bronzed finish and scrolled corner ornaments. Stretcher: 36 in. H x 29 in. W. Frame: 41 in. H x 35 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection.
CONDITION: Likely lined, with craquelure throughout. With scattered, minor retouching to lower third, largest 1/4 in. Area of overpaint fluoresces on tree trunk lower left quadrant. Losses to frame along edges, up to 2 1/2 in. L.
