American School, circa 1920, oil on canvas portrait of Nancy Winslow Squire Hitch (b. 1913), at about age 9, wearing a blue dress with collar and her auburn hair in pigtails. Signed lower right with faint initials, possibly “J.P.” Whitewashed molded frame. Stretcher: 17 in. H x 15 in. W. Frame: 24 in. H x 22 in. W.
Note: the subject was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Squire. He was a noted Chicago-born music professor and art collector. Squire resided in France and Germany between 1908-1911 and, after his marriage, continued traveling between the two continents over the next decade, acquiring works by a variety of artists – including several he had befriended. The creator of this portrait of his daughter, however, remains unknown. Several other paintings from the Squire collection are also included in this auction.
PROVENANCE: By descent in the family of the subject to the present consignor.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with some light grime; 1/2 in. dent to canvas at subject’s right shoulder; couple of scattered areas of buckling/creasing to canvas. Frame has some wear to painted surface and to corners.
