Thirteen (13) decorative items, including cigarette and match holders, marquetry tray, art deco box, and ashtrays. 1st item: French mechanical green lacquer and gilt cigar or cigarette holder, hexagonal form. Each side is decorated with an outdoor scene featuring Persian figures engaging in various activities, the top with stylized foliate decoration and gilt goliate finial that acts as a lever to the six doors of the body, revealing a similarly decorated interior with holders for cigars or cigarettes, all resting on gilt bun feet. Marked on the base “Made in France”. 7 1/2″ H x 7 3/8″ dia. Early 20 century. 2nd item: Marquetry mahogany serving tray, oval with a pierced brass gallery and handles, inlaid to the center and marked on the base “Robinson & Sons Maker”. 16 1/4″ H x 26 3/4″ W. 20th century. 3rd item: Vintage green calcite lidded keepsake box. Base with oval paper label CROSS. 4 1/8″ H x 6 7/8″ W x 5″ D. 20th century. 4th-6th items: Three (3) French gilt metal and porcelain match holders, all with painted polychrome designs and stamped on the base FRANCE. 3″ H x 2 3/4″ W. 20th century. 7th item: Bronze match holder, modeled as a tree trunk with an alligator encircling the base. 4″ H x 3″ W. 20th century. 8th item: Chinese enamel on metal matchbox holder with floral design on blue ground. Marked CHINA to interior. 2 1/4″ H x 1 5/8″ W x 7/8″ D. 9th-10th items: Two (2) metal ashtrays, including one (1) bronze Art Nouveau petal form with relief design of nude bathers, stamped with partially legible number to underside (8″ dia.); and one (1) copper leaf form with curved stem handle (5 3/4″ H x 4 5/8″ W). 20th century. 11th-13th items: Three (3) French porcelain ashtrays with brass, ridged rims having hand-painted, polychrome floral designs, including one (1) Sevres oval form, stamped with blue maker’s mark to underside; and two (2) square forms, stamped with red maker’s mark and MADE IN FRANCE to underside. Ranging in size from 3 1/4″ H x 5 3/8″ W to 3 5/8″ H x 3 3/4″ W. Late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
CONDITION: 1st item: Finial mechanism not working, box will not fully close. Overall good condition with some light general wear and rubbing. 2nd item: Losses to edge below one handle, one base support missing. 3rd item: Chipping to corners of lid, underside of lid with losses and old repair. 4th-6th items: One box with old repaired break to porcelain cover, another missing gilt metal side insert. All with use wear and oxidation to metal fittings/inserts. 7th item: Overall good condition with oxidation to bronze. 8th item: Scattered wear and minute losses to enamel decoration. 9th-10th items: Both items in overall good condition with scattered minor areas of oxidation. Leaf form with minor loss at rim. 11th-13th items: Overall very good condition with scattered minute wear to glaze.
