Nineteen (19) Russian Palekh and Mstera School painted lacquer boxes, the majority depicting scenes from traditional Russian fairy tales and folklore including Morozko (Father Frost), winter and troika scenes, and peasants engaged in various scenes of everyday life, one (1) box with foliate decorations and one (1) box with an architectural scene having Mother of Pearl inlay. Fourteen (14) with hinged lids and five (5) with lift tops. All boxes signed or stamped to lower left or right margins, to interiors of lids, or undersides of bases. One (1) box with Palekh Certificate of Quality paperwork and gold sticker to underside of base, grouping includes two associated pieces of paperwork with Cyrillic text. Ranging in size from 1" H x 2 1/4" W x 2 1/4" H x 7 1/8" dia. Most items likely mid to late 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Patricia Kiegel, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: All items in overall good condition with light surface wear, few minor losses to lacquer, largest 1/2", primarily to edges. One small box with loose hinge lid.
