Manner of Alfred Jacob Miller (American, 1810-1874), ink and oil sketch on canvas depicting a mountain man, possibly a fur trader, seated with bag slung over his shoulder, against an indistinct and partially unfinished background. Unsigned. Partial label en verso of stretcher seems to refer to a business, possibly an art supply business, with articles "always on hand," in proximity to the "Manchester Art Union". The painting has a 20th century backing board with reference to the "Victor Spark?" Gallery and shipping/crate information. Canvas – 12"H x 9 1/2"W. Later giltwood molded frame – 18 1/2"H x 16"W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Ann H. Wells, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Original canvas affixed to stretchers with square nails. Some abrasions to perimeter of canvas from framing materials. Examination under UV light shows a small area of overpaint to beard area and patches to possible pin holes at each of the four corners. Overall very good condition.
