Oil on canvas portrait by Henry Peters Gray (NY, 1819-1877), after John Singleton Copley. Portrait of Henry White. Subject is depicted in middle age, dressed in a brown coat and holding his cocked hat in his gloved hand. Henry White (1732-1786) was a prominent New York merchant and president of the NY Chamber of Commerce. He married Eva Van Cortlandt (see related lot, #324). Molded giltwood frame. Overall good condition with cracquelure throughout and some paint repair and loss. Framed: 30-1/2" W x 36" H, Sight: 23-3/4" W x 29-3/4" H. American, mid-19th century. Provenance: Collection of Reverend Henry Munro Bruen. This portrait is one of two known copies painted by Henry Peters Gray in the mid-19th century for descendants of Henry White and has been documented by The Frick Art Museum as having always belonged to descendants of the subject's family.
