Edward George Armfield (United Kingdom, 1817-1896) oil on canvas genre scene painting depicting two terriers examining a lantern open on the ground, surrounded by hay, a hand shovel, and a broken chair in an interior setting, likely a shed or a barn. Signed "E Armfield" lower right. Housed in a giltwood frame with carved scrolling oak leaves. Sight: 9 3/4" H x 14" W. Framed: 17 1/4" H x 21 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure. 3/4" x 1/2" area of repair visible lower right en verso with corresponding inpainting. 1/8" x 6" gap between right edge of canvas and frame. Frame with areas of loss, largest 3/8" x 1/4", with natural age shrinkage.
