George (Smith) Armfield (United Kingdom, 1808-1893) oil on canvas genre scene painting depicting three terriers, one on top of a green wooden barrel, all staring avidly at a small brown spot, likely a dead mouse, on the floor in an interior setting, likely a barn or a shed. Signed "G. Armfield" lower left. Nashville, TN framing label en verso. Housed in an ebonzied wooden frame with a giltwood fillet. Sight: 11 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Framed: 17 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure with buckling to right side of canvas. Three patches indicating repairs, largest 1" x 2 1/2", visible top left, top center, and lower right en verso of canvas with corresponding areas of inpainting.
