Alexander Leggett (United Kingdom, 1828-1884) oil on canvas genre painting depicting a couple gingerly removing the shoes of their young child, who is seated upon the father's lap while a younger toddler plays at the mother's feet. Signed and dated "Alex Legget 186-" lower left. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with acanthus accent to corners having placard with erroneous attribution and date affixed to lower, center sight edge. Sight: 24 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed: 34 1/4" H x 39 1/4" W. Purchased Brown's Antiques, Nashville, 1965; ex-Altman's, Glasgow, Scotland.
PROVENANCE: Property of a Tennessee Religious Institution.
CONDITION: Minute scattered surface grime, minute scattered exfoliation, and tear to canvas (stable) at lower center edge, measuring 2 1/2" L. Canvas is lined. Frame with scattered wear to gilt, largest area measuring 3 3/4" x 3/8".
