19th century European school oil on canvas painting, in the manner of Bartolome Esteban Murillo (Spanish, 1618-1682) depicting Mary, attired in a simple red dress with blue and brown robes or coverings, and the Christ Child standing on her lap, all against a black backdrop. Old unidentified gallery label en verso. Unsigned. Housed in a rope and ripple carved wood frame with red and gilt paint and a gilt wood liner. Sight: 43 1/2" H x 39" W. Framed: 51 3/4" H x 43" W.
CONDITION: Craquelure overall with exfoliation and losses to paint primarily to the left margin and left lower quadrant. Scattered minor losses to upper right margin. Rubbing along the upper stretcher. Painting has been relined. Losses and repairs to frame including gilt touch ups.
