Two (2) Japanese Edo period woodblock prints and one (1) Alfred Koehn Chinese illustration book, 3 items total. 1st item: Isoda Koryusai (Japanese, 1735-1790) color woodblock print titled “Seki-dera” (Seki Temple) or “Masked Man on a Boat” from the “Furyu Nana Komachi” (Seven Fashionable Komachi) series, depicting two females standing on a dock and speaking to a man wearing a mask in a small boat. Black Japanese characters, top left and center right. Pencil inscription, en verso. 10 3/8″ H x 7 3/4″ W. 2nd item: GATHERED BEAUTY: TWELVE REPRODUCTIONS OF FLOWERS IN BASKETS FROM OLD PAINTINGS, compiled by Alfred Koehn, illustraed by Chou Ch’i Liang, published ‘at the Lotus Court’, Peking (Beijing), 1946. Hardcover quarto, 12 full color plates depicting flowering baskets, hardbound in one quarter red cloth with brown paper sides with a mounted illustration to front cover. 12 3/8″ H x 9 3/8″ W x 1/4″ D. 3rd item: Takehara Shunsensai (Japanese, active late 18th/early 19th century) woodblock print titled “Myoan-ji Temples Ikkokusan and Ichinoya” from AN ILLUSTRATED BUDDHIST HISTORY, PUBLISH 1803. Depicts the Myoan-ji Buddhist temple complex located in Kyoto, Japan. Black Japanese characters, top left, English pencil inscriptions, lower right below image. Printed English label, lower left of mat. Hinge mounted to an off white mat. Sheet: 10 1/8″ H x 12 7/8″ W. Mat: 14 1/4″ H x 17 1/2″ W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of F. Hamilton Hazlehurst, longtime chair of the Vanderbilt University Art Department.
CONDITION: All items in overall good condition with toning/fading. 1st item: Areas of loss, largest 1/4″ x 2 1/4″, to edges of sheet. Foxing spots with old piece of tape, top left and pencil inscription, lower center, en verso. 2nd item: Covers in overall good condition with areas of dampstaining, largest 3 1/2″ x 2 1/4″, areas of loss, separation, largest 1″, to spine, corners bumped. 1 1/4″ x 6 1/4″ areas of acid burn to front matter pages. Retail pencil inscription to front pastedown page. 3rd item: Overall good condition with scattered minute foxing spots. Small piece of scotch tape joining both sheets to lower center margin.
