William McAlpine (British, active 19th century) oil on canvas maritime painting depicting ships in stormy waters off a coastline with cargo floating in the water, foreground, and a castle on a hill in the distance. The most visually prominent ship appears to fly a French naval ensign flag. Signed verso, on stretcher (near corner). Remnants of old label and recent artist biography label on opposite stretcher and later artist attribution inscription en verso of canvas. Later frame with laurel and acanthus moldings. Sight – 31"W x 17" H. Frame – 40"W x 26"H.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Hunter Kay, Franklin, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Likely relined. Repaired puncture upper left quadrant in sky area, a few other possible scattered small areas of touchup. Frame exhibits shrinkage at corners, and some minor spots of chipping to outermost corners.
