Large Chinese panoramic handpainted on paper scroll painting, rendered in watercolor, ink and gouache, depicting a military or royal procession including men in official garments, some atop horses and others with banners, entering into a walled city, with villagers bowing along their path. An unoccupied temple sits in the background with a large landscape visible in the distant background. Mounted onto a paper support and framed by a silk border. Inscription en verso near one of the handles. Painting: 39 1/2" H x 75 1/2" W. Overall: 42 3/4" H x 82" W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee, acquired when they visited China as part of a US-sponsored cultural exchange delegation of architects in the early 1970s.
CONDITION: Overall toning and to paper and vertical craquelure to painting. Scattered losses, particularly to the lower edge and right margin, some vertical splits to paper of right margin.
