Schoolgirl sampler, signed Harriet Amelia Wheeley, silk on linen, done in shades of green, gold and brown. The design consists of cross-stitched upper and lower case alphabets and numbers, divided by rows of geometrics, over a poem or verse and a lower row of pictorial images including trees and flowering plants, eight point stars, crowns, and the stitcher's signature under a heart, all enclosed in a trefoil band border. Later wood molded frame. Probably American/New England, circa 1830. 12-1/3" x 12-1/3" sight, 15-1/2" x 15-1/2" framed. Condition: Discoloration and small losses to outer edges, scattered ground losses particularly at left center below smallest alphabet. Not examined out of frame, but appears to be stitched to backing rather than glued.
