Greek religious painted icon, gilt and tempera on panel, depicting Saint George as a Roman soldier on horseback slaying a green dragon (emblematic of evil) beneath his horse with a long lance or spear. Greek inscription to upper left and right with an additional label with Greek en verso. Housed in a wood frame with dark red velvet mat. Sight: 11 3/4" H x 8 3/4" W. Framed: 17" H x 13 3/4" W. 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Ronnie Steine, Nashville.
CONDITION: Some minor losses to paint, mostly to left margin, lower left corner, and horse's head together with areas of craquelure. Pest damage visible en verso.
