Four (4) Mughal or Persian illuminated gouache and watercolor manuscripts depicting court and interior scenes. 1st item: Pair of illuminated manuscripts, together in one frame, depicting intimate scenes of a king with a female, one in an interior with partial landscape view and the other on a terrace. Figures are depicted in royal attire with jewels, reclining on floor cushions and rugs, with a fountain in the foreground, sharing a drink. Each manuscript top border with Nastaliq script; one with Nastaliq script to lower left margin. Housed in a giltwood frame linen matte and blue liner. Sights: 8 3/8″ H x 4 1/8″ W. Frame: 16″ H x 18 1/4″ W. 2nd item: Framed illuminated manuscript depicting a bustling court scene, the center with an emperor seated on a throne surrounded by numerous attendants engaging in various activities together with figures approaching the throne upper left. Architectural elements and floral alcoves visible in the background. Nastaliq script to lower-middle margin. Housed in a giltwood frame with linen matte and red liner. Sight: 8 1/4″ H x 5 1/4″ W. Framed: 15 7/8″ H x 12 7/8″ W. 3rd item: Framed illuminated manuscript depicting an interior scene with a royal figure seated on a throne surrounded by three attendants, two with canes, with four more figures standing in the foreground, three of which are carrying canes and one with a shield upon his back. Foliate architectural alcoves are depicted in the background and mid-ground. Upper and lower borders with Nastaliq script. Housed in a giltwood frame with linen matte and red liner. Sight: 7″ H x 3 3/4″ W. Framed: 13″ H x 9 3/4″ W. All pieces late 18th/early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carolyn Mulder, Fairfax, Virginia.
CONDITION: All pieces in overall good condition with scattered foxing, creasing, and some areas of staining. Scattered tearing to edges, larges measuring 1/4″ L; loss to lower left corner of one panel in first pair.
