Covered Diao Tian lacquer box, round form with overall low relief carved scrolling dark green-black leaves and cinnabar chrysanthemum decoration on a red ground; matching square under tray with chrysanthemum decoration to the edges. Box measures 6 7/8" dia. Tray measures" 8 1/2" square. Japanese or Chinese, 20th century. Provenance: Consignor's family received box and tray as a gift from a former member of General MacArthur's staff in occupied Japan after surrender in WWII. CONDITION: Some loss of shine/gloss to top of box and outer edges of tray. Crack to lacquer in one corner of tray and hairlines to top of box.
