American Secretary-bookcase, mahogany with yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Flat projecting cornice over a frieze adorned with gilt brass applied cast Classical decoration, over two glazed doors with diamond shaped mullions. Doors are flanked by stiles capped with gilt brass figural busts and wreaths at top. Interior has shelves and interiors of doors are lined in yellow silk. Fold out writing surface with compartments for ink. Single dovetailed drawer over two cabinet doors (lined with silk on the interior), on a plinth base with rounded feet. Paneled sides. 89"H x 48"W x 21"D. Probably Baltimore, circa 1825. Provenance: estate of A. Welling LaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn. Condition: Patches scattered throughout piece, baize replaced with leather, scattered fading, abrasions and scratches, minor veneer chips on lower ledge receiving fold over writing surface, overall very good condition. Silk probably replaced.
