A near pair of 19th century Chinese bamboo armchairs with wicker seats. Both with identical designs including openwork decoration to backrests, armrests, and front stretchers. Character inscriptions on legs and front stretchers of chairs. Small brass plates on undersides of seats, the smaller marked "442" and the taller "439." Accession numbers marked under seats. 30" H x 21" W x 17 1/4" D and 30 3/4" H x 21" W x 17" D. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. CONDITION: Both chairs in good condition with wear consistent with age. Diagonal support rods beneath seats appear to be later additions, as well as some bamboo pieces along tops of backrests and exterior sides of seats. Minor repair to right arm of smaller chair. Slight losses to openwork on backrests and arms. Wicker seats likely replacements.
