Southwest Virginia redware/stoneware transitional pottery jar, made by J. W. Gardner & Co. which operated in Craig's Mill, Virginia (Washington County). Maker's stamp and encircled "4" (denoting gallon capacity) below one the lughandles. Condition – Few shallow chips to rim and base along with another small chip to base. Scattered hairline cracks. 13 1/2" H. Note: J. W. Gardner is listed in the checklist of Great Road Potters working in Virginia and Tennesseefrom 1776 – 1880. Late 19th century.
